Autumn – 2014 – a review of recent work
We began with a Slack Space Saturday morning ‘promo’ event which attracted a number of new people but they were only really interested in having a sing on that day and few joined choir on a more permanent basis. Later in term had a World Music workshop from Maggie Hamilton ( who collected a lot of the African and Hispanic music we sing) on September 18 and another World Music workshop by Chris Rowbury ( leader of several world music choirs) on October 23rd. And on 13th November, our old composer friend Tony Barr came from Chicago to visit us and talked for a while about his new work
Octavia took part in a charity gig at Headgate on November 1st.
The two small groups laid down tracks for a projected CD of their music at the beginning of November (working title Angel Band) and, hopefully, in the spring , we will have edited the main Quire recordings (which we did in the summer for the forthcoming cd Revelation! ) are well on the way to issuing them on general release
Our Christmas Concert – The Passing Year – was at St Teresa of Lisieux on December 5th and seemed to go down well. The mixture of European ‘seasonal’ songs – hence The Passing Year’ and short poems by U A Fanthorpe marked a change from previous years where we had had a more elaborate script for a group of readers.
Spring – 2015
We are busy rehearsing for a complex programme on The Music of Revolution. This should provide material for several concerts before the summer. The ‘Revolutionary’ concert is on March 20th at Lion Walk and Dorian Kelly will provide the visuals as he did last year for the concert on Justice and Freedom.
Octavia are busy again with an event for Women’s Rights at Wivenhoe Nottage Institute on March 7th followed by another Clack Space appearance on March 14th.
We are hoping to run a Gospel Workshop on March 20th with Lauren Dove – this will be at Lion Walk. Visitors welcome. by the way.
Octavia and Towering Angels are taking part in a charity gig at Brightlingsea Community Centre on March 28th organized by our very own Craig Whipps.
We are hoping that we can run a gig on April 17th with Octavia and Towering Angels (possibly at the Minories or even at the Officer’s Club – watch this space) The gig will be called Strange Fruit and will trace the blues origins in a lot of work we do.. Soul, Gospel. Bill is going to sing a few Leadbelly Blues to get us in to the mood ! ( hopefully! )
On May 1st Towering Angels are taking part in an event to raise money for the Food Bank at the Headgate theatre – organized by Steve Ford.
We have a Quire gig booked for St Mary’s Hadleigh on Saturday May 16th – possibly drawing on material learnt earlier in the year.. and
The final concert could be at Castle Methodist or St Teresa’s Lexden. The date will be June 26th. Perhaps by then we can finally launch the small group CD ( Angel Band) and the Quire CD Revelation!
Busy year once again. Readers of this blog who are interest in Quire should contact us of course. We are still rehearsing at Lion Walk Church on Thursday evenings from 7pm .
